New Delhi, Sept. 3:India is set to elect its 15th Vice President on September 9, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar last month on health grounds. The announcement sets the stage for a high-stakes contest between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition’s INDIA bloc.
The Contestants
The Election Commission, in its August 7 notification, confirmed that only two names remain after scrutiny and withdrawals:
C. P. Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s official nominee and a senior BJP leader known for his organizational skills.
B. Sudarshan Reddy, an independent candidate backed by the INDIA bloc, who has emerged as the face of opposition consolidation.
Voting will take place through a secret ballot in Parliament, with results expected the same evening. The Vice President-elect will immediately assume the office of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, a role central to the functioning of India’s parliamentary democracy.

Symbolism Beyond Numbers
With the BJP holding a comfortable majority in Parliament, the NDA is widely expected to secure victory. Yet, analysts stress that the election carries importance far beyond its outcome.
“The Vice Presidential election may be a formality in terms of arithmetic, but it is deeply symbolic,” said noted commentator Pratap Bhanu Mehta. “It highlights the ruling coalition’s confidence, but equally showcases the opposition’s determination to project unity ahead of crucial state polls.”
A Test Run for Larger Battles
For the NDA, the election is an opportunity to showcase stability and cohesion in governance. For the INDIA bloc, it is a chance to test opposition unity and demonstrate that it can coordinate effectively, even when the odds are stacked against it.
Political observers say the contest will shape the narrative heading into the 2025 assembly elections and the next general election cycle. “The Vice President’s chair may be constitutional, but the fight for it is undeniably political,” remarked a senior parliamentary journalist.
As September 9 approaches, the stage is set not just for the election of a Vice President but for a preview of the political realignments that may define India’s electoral future.
