Monsoon Fury Wreaks Havoc in Himalayan States: Over 30 Killed in Jammu Landslides

Jammu/Srinagar/Shimla, Aug 30:

The Himalayan states are once again bearing the brunt of nature’s fury, with relentless monsoon rains triggering landslides, flash floods, and widespread devastation.

In Jammu, over 30 people have been reported dead after multiple landslides hit areas near the Vaishno Devi shrine, burying houses and disrupting pilgrimage routes. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed for large-scale operations.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, and Kashmir are on high flood alert, with swollen rivers threatening to breach embankments. In Himachal, several districts reported washed-out bridges and stranded tourists. The Srinagar–Jammu highway also remains blocked due to landslides, crippling connectivity.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall in the region over the next 72 hours, raising fears of further calamities.

Disaster experts told Epress Chronicle that climate change is making extreme rainfall events more frequent and intense, putting mountainous states at increasing risk of catastrophic floods and landslides.
