Dibrugarh, August 26: Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, has been designated as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Rare Diseases by the Government of India, marking a significant milestone for healthcare in the Northeast.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through its Rare Disease Cell, issued an official memorandum on Tuesday approving the inclusion of AMCH among the country’s premier government tertiary hospitals equipped to handle diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of rare diseases.

With this recognition, AMCH becomes the first medical institution in Assam and the entire Northeastern region to receive the prestigious status, joining the ranks of only 15 such Centres of Excellence nationwide.

As outlined in the memorandum, the institute’s responsibilities will align with the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021, and subsequent guidelines issued by the Ministry.

The designation is expected to significantly enhance specialized healthcare and research in rare and complex diseases, ensuring better access to advanced treatment for patients not only from Assam but also from across the Northeast.
